No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
