An underground economy for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and vendors on communication apps, based on new investigations.
Experimental Drug Gaining Popularity Via Social Media
Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning properties. Viewers are encouraged to contact these profiles directly for source information, while also obtaining promotional offers.
Active Commerce on Social Networks
Separately, a robust market exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, injection guides and claims of next-day British shipping. Sellers promote the substance there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Understanding Retatrutide
Retatrutide is an experimental injectable created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist individuals lose up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Voice Concerns
However, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unlicensed medication in the UK is worrisome and could result in users administering substances of uncertain source.
Some experts said the popularity for retatrutide could be connected to the increasing price of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Implementation
Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be promoted or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Several influencers attempt to circumvent the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but promotion and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and consumer regulations, risking penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.
Service Reaction and Material Removal
According to the social media company, the platform has taken down violative material and banned related hashtags and query recommendations. The organization stated it was committed to keeping the service safe and investing in enhancing compliance measures.
Online Trading Activities
Research also discovered communities with up to 9,000 members marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with thousands of users, filled with photos of slimming results, glowing reviews and detailed instructions for preparing or injecting at residence.
After minutes of joining one community, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions occur. The vendor sent an instruction manual and promised shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None inquired about weight, health issues or past usage.
Product Information and Pricing
Within these groups, posts display black plastic parcels with Royal Mail labels, stating to include new batches. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can choose between powder vials, prepared at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens usually priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory responses ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.
Service Oversight and Safety Measures
A representative for Telegram said it regularly moderated harmful material on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Cautions
“Individuals are injecting substances they can’t verify. Although the science behind retatrutide is valid, these digital versions may not include what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
A medical professional of an online medical service linked the increase in demand to current cost increases for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are using social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she said.
Her team has already seen individuals injured by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your health,” stated the doctor. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Statement
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet approved … may subject patients to potentially serious medical dangers”.
